Prices for travel to Qatar have dropped 8 per cent in the year to August, in an analysis of fares across the Flight Centre Travel Group. Travel to Italy has fallen 3 per cent, while travel to the US has dropped 2 per cent.
In a sign of the continued demand for premium travel, even as economy cabin prices have edged up 2 per cent, business class costs have remained flat, suggesting yet more capacity in this category of travel entering Australian markets.
Much of this growth has been led by Gulf nation carriers, exploiting their geography, to take Australians on one-stop trips to Europe.
According to BITRE, the total seats available on international flights to and from Australia in June were 4.319 million – an increase of 5.9 per cent over a year ago.
