Vula’a Kele takes top spot at Sir Puka Temu Cup to win K50,000

The Aroma Coast came alive as the Sir Puka Temu Cup open canoe race unfolded at Maopa Village, marking a highlight of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence celebrations.

Despite strong winds and challenging tides, participating canoes powered through, showcasing traditional skill and strength in the rough seas.

Emerging at the front was Vula’a Kele of Hula village, Rigo District, claiming first place and walking away with the K50,000 top prize. Fellow Hula canoe Marshall secured second place with a K35,000 reward, while Waikato of Viriolo clinched third place, earning K30,000. Host canoe Constable, from Maopa Village, finished in fourth, taking home K20,000.

In total, K160,000 in prize money is to be distributed, with additional prizes allocated to other participating canoes based on performance and participation.

The Sir Puka Temu Cup, sponsored by the Member for Abau, Sir Puka Temu, drew excitement across the Aroma Coast, Rigo District and the Motuan Coastline with cultural traditions and excitement. The event highlighted the pride of coastal communities to keep alive one of PNG’s iconic sporting traditions in the Central Province.
