The U.S. Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution to designate Oct. 14, 2025 as a .
The date marks what would have been the political activist’s 32nd birthday.
Charlie was a good man — a devout husband, father, and friend. His life was shaped by his faith and the idea that in America, debate and discussion are crucial to the betterment of our country, said Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican who represents Florida, said in .
Scott also said he is “proud to join together with my colleagues” to honor Kirk’s life and legacy.
“Charlie inspired millions of young Americans to be involved in the future of their country and make their voices heard. He’d travel to college campuses around the nation to share ideas and talk about them,” Scott noted.
“And Charlie was never afraid to have a discussion. He didn’t care if you agreed or disagreed with his ideas. He welcomed the opportunity to respectfully and peacefully debate ideas in the court of public opinion,” the senator added.
In conjunction with Scott, Congressman Jimmy Patronis introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Patronis said he and the resolution’s co-sponsors wanted to recognize Kirk “for his contributions to civic education and public service.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson said the House is poised to pass the resolution not only to honor Kirk, but also to condemn the political violence that led to his assassination.
“The honor of his memory will go one,” Johnson said.
“The best way to honor the work and the legacy and the ministry of Charlie Kirk is to do what he did and that is to advance the principles that he advanced and to adopt his approach. What I mean by that is the principles that Charlie advanced were the good things. Scripture talks about (how) we focus on the noble and praiseworthy — the good. And Charlie did that.”
Kirk was shot and killed Sept. 10 while he was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. He was 31 years old.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested Friday in connection to the deadly shooting.
Prosecutors lated announced that Robinson was charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm and obstructing justice. He was also charged with witness tampering because he allegedly told his partner to delete their text messages and to stay silent if questioned by police, according to the Utah County attorney. The charges could result in the death penalty if Robinson is convicted.
