Long before New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed on Wednesday that backup Tyrod Taylor will start in place of the injured Justin Fields (concussion) for this coming Sunday’s game at the 2-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, some media members suggested that Fields going down with a setback could open the door for a potential quarterback controversy.
For a piece published on Wednesday, Jets reporter Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com noted that “it would be unwise for the Jets to hand the ball right back to Fields if Taylor plays well” at Raymond James Stadium in Week 3.
Could New York Jets stick with Tyrod Taylor after Tampa Bay Buccaneers game?
“Wins are hard enough to come by in the NFL,” Vasquez wrote while referencing the 0-2 Jets. “And if Taylor gets a hot hand on Sunday against the Bucs, the Jets would be wise to ride it for as long as they can.”
Numerous reports shared how Fields was responsible for “uneven” performances from the start of training camp through the final week of August. He then seemed to silence such chatter when he completed 16-of-22 passes for 218 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) in the Jets’ 34-32 Week 1 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, Fields then produced what could go down as the worst performance from a QB1 this season when he connected on 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards before he suffered a concussion in the Jets’ 30-10 home defeat against the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday. For what it’s worth, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated isn’t completely buying that the Jets would bench a healthy Fields next week if Taylor guides the club to a win over Tampa Bay.
Will Justin Fields get a “runway to play” after Week 3?
“What I’ve heard from everyone who’s coached Fields going back to college is that he needs runway to play,” Breer wrote for a mailbag posted on Wednesday. “Based on the contract the Jets gave him, it’s been their intention to give him that. So I can’t imagine one bad Sunday will change all that, even if I would say we’ve already seen that Aaron Glenn’s going to do things his own way.”
The Jets can escape Fields’ contract next offseason, meaning Glenn and Co. are married to the team’s signal-callers only on a short-term basis. If nothing else, it’s interesting that Breer didn’t completely slam the door shut on the idea of Taylor getting the nod for New York’s Week 4 game at the Miami Dolphins.
