SIOUX CITY — Seven candidates are vying for three open seats on the Sioux City school board this November.
The seats are currently held by Dan Greenwell, Bob Michaelson and Jan George, all of who have opted to run again.
Candidates had until 5 p.m. Thursday to return nomination papers for the Nov. 4 election. The list includes the three incumbents, as well as Jedediah Hibbs, AJ Cecil-Starlin, Christian Supilot Perez, and Cyndi Hanson. Here is a brief look at who has filed.
Jan George, who currently serves as the board president, was elected in 2021. He taught at West High for 31 years before retiring, serving as a government teacher, wresting coach and special education teacher.
Bob Michaelson was also elected in 2021. He taught and coached for 35 years — 30 of those at West Middle School. He currently serves as the dean of students at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.
Dan Greenwell was first elected to the board in 2019. He was most recently elected in 2023 for an unexpired, two-year term. The seat was vacated by Perla Alarcon-Flory after she moved to Arkansas with her family.
Greenwell is currently the CEO of Customer Dynamics and president of the Shelby Monroe Group LLC.
Jebediah Hibbs is a Navy veteran and heads The Freightliners parent volunteer group. He has one child in the district and two that have graduated. His wife also teaches in the district. He ran for a term on the board in 2023.
Cyndi Hanson is the human resources manager at Briar Cliff University. Hanson ran for U.S. 4th District against Steve King in Republican primary in 2018.
