Cyprus and Israel energy ministers met in Tel Aviv on Wednesday to advance discussions on the Aphrodite and Ishai gas fields and progress the Israel-Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnection project.
Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Giorgos Papanastasiou and Israeli Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen discussed prospects for a hydrocarbon exploitation agreement during the working meeting. The ministers also reviewed energy cooperation initiatives described as geopolitically significant for the Eastern Mediterranean.
The talks focused on advancing negotiations between the two countries regarding the cross-border Aphrodite and Ishai natural gas deposits. Both fields lie in disputed waters between Cyprus and Israel, requiring coordinated development plans.
Papanastasiou conducted a one-day working visit to Israel, participating in a business forum alongside his ministerial meetings. The minister engaged with Israeli business leaders to explore potential cooperation and investment opportunities in Cyprus.
The discussions covered various sectors beyond energy, including technology partnerships and infrastructure development projects.
During his visit, the Cypriot minister represented the government at an event organised by the Cyprus Embassy in Tel Aviv commemorating the anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus’s independence.
