Ghana’s cement makers warn of threat from surging Togo imports

The Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG) is calling on the Ministry of Trade and Industry to urgently curb the increasing inflow of Cimco-branded cement from Togo, warning that it poses a serious threat to the survival of local producers.

According to the chamber, the influx, which has intensified in the past two months, is most visible in the Volta Region and Ada but is steadily spreading toward Accra.

The Chief Executive of COCMAG, Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, told Citi Business News that the trend, if left unchecked, could cripple Ghana’s cement industry.

“The greater proportion of this influx enters through Aflao, moving down to Ada and Tema, and gradually trickling into other parts of the country. What starts small quickly spreads widely. We have evidence that these products are being packaged and branded as Cimco cement,” Dr Dawson-Ahmoah explained.

He confirmed that the matter has already been raised with the Minister of Trade, with assurances that interventions are being considered.

COCMAG cautioned, however, that any delay in addressing the situation could trigger job losses, weaken local production capacity, and stall the government’s industrialisation drive.
