Manchester is getting another food hall as developer eyes TEN kichen warehouse overhaul

Plans for a new food hall in an old warehouse in Manchester have been revealed. The Grade II listed Ducie Street Warehouse, near Piccadilly train station, is set to be transformed with 10 kitchens, two bars and a huge seating area if the plans get the green light. The building on Ducie Street currently houses restaurants, a gym and a cinema room as well as a 194-bedroom aparthotel on the upper floors. If the latest plans are approved, the ground floor would be turned into a food hall – although the cinema would stay. It comes after a boutique gym based in the building suddenly shut earlier this year when relations with the landlord broke down . The new plans have been put forward by Manchester Street Food, an offshoot of Edinburgh Street food which opened in 2023. A planning application for the changes to Ducie Street Warehouse has now been submitted to Manchester council. In a letter submitted as part of the application, planning agent Turley wrote: “The ‘Street Food’ brand works with a range of vibrant and independent street food vendors to provide varied yet complementary choices, whilst showcasing local breweries and distilleries. “Their operations focus on supporting local businesses and to diverse the food and beverage offer to create a welcoming and accessible food experiences.” Ducie Street Warehouse was built in 1867 as one of four warehouses belonging to the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. It was listed in 1974, requiring developers to apply for planning to permission to make certain changes to the layout of the building. However, according to planning documents, there will be no additional floorspace created as a result of the changes proposed. Aside from the internal alterations, the design also includes internally illuminating a lift shaft located to the side of the building. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE
