M-Pox cases hit 94,vaccines in Friday

Ministry of Health has confirmed four new cases of M-pox in Lilongwe, bringing the total number of cases to 94 since Malawi reported the first case on April 17 this year.

Public Health Institute of Malawi under the ministry said in a statement dated September 7 2025 that the new cases were reported at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe on September 5.

“The cases are an 11-year-old male, three-year-old female and two other females aged 24 years. They were presenting with fever, cough, headache, shortness of breath and skin rash among other signs and symptoms with no underlying condition,” reads part of the statement.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe said the ministry is intensifying surveillance to thwart further spread of the disease.

He has since advised the public to be on alert and take preventive and control measures as the disease has the potential to affect more people.

“As a ministry, we continue with surveillance for new cases. All ports of entry are screening immigrants. We are also promoting hygiene in areas where cases have been registered,” said Chikumbe.

He said 33 000 doses of M-Pox vaccine will arrive in the country this Friday, stating that the ministry will target high-risk districts of Lilongwe, Mangochi, Ntcheu, Salima, Likoma, Nkhata Bay, Blantyre, Mzimba South, Karonga, Zomba and Chitipa.

Meanwhile, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences Professor of public health and epidemiology Adamson Muula has called for intensified contact tracing to end further spread of the disease

In an interview yesterday, he said given the fact that the M-Pox vaccine administration will roll out soon, the country can manage the disease.

In a separate interview, Malawi Health Equity Network executive director George Jobe called on stakeholders to adhere to preventive measures set by health authorities.
