Public spaces like parks, libraries, transit systems, and communal facilities are fundamental to civic life. They serve as places of connection, reflection, and shared experience. And yet, an observable erosion of considerate behaviour in these spaces hints at a broader issue: a weakening of the civic consciousness that binds diverse societies together. Everyday encounters are increasingly marred by disruptive behaviours, blaring music in buses, loud phone conversations in quiet zones, queue jumping, and intrusive stares. These are not isolated incidents; they represent a growing disregard for social norms that enable peaceful coexistence. One such intervention could be the formal introduction of a public etiquette and conduct module in primary and secondary school curricula. Students would not only learn practical norms such as respecting personal space or engaging politely in shared settings but also explore the values underpinning those norms: empathy, mindfulness, and civic engagement.

Stand with Jewish people

Re “Political violence not confined to U.S.” (Editorial, Sept. 14): Mark Carney expresses appropriate revulsion for the murder of Charlie Kirk, as he should. Yet, he is silent about the attacks on Jews in Canada. He does make inane comments to the Jewish community about ‘standing with you,’ but those are hollow words said without conviction or follow-through. Our prime minister’s silence and inaction fail all Canadians. When one group of Canadians are abandoned and isolated, all Canadians should be wary. What group will be next? It is time for Mark Carney to show some moral leadership, or based on his first few months in office, is that too much to expect?

(The Liberals have lost all moral clarity on this.)

Make-believe problems

Re “Judge Carney by what he promised” (Editorial, Sept. 16): Another typical Liberal ‘solution’ to a problem they created. This time, the arsonists/firefighters have chosen to throw away $13 billion on house building. The fact is, we don’t have a housing problem, but we do have an immigration problem that they created. The feds need to do two things. 1. Put a moratorium on new immigrants and get rid of those who are not legally entitled to be here, and 2. Get the hell out of the way and let free markets take care of business without being strangled by high government fees and regulations. I’m tired of my money being thrown away on make-believe problems.

Rick Mailloux

(Carney doesn’t seem to want to address the difficult issues facing the country.)
