William Fleming High School in northwest Roanoke was under lockdown for more than an hour Thursday afternoon as police investigated a potential threat made over social media.
The lockdown began just before 1 p.m. and was lifted just after 2 p.m. after Roanoke Police determined the threat was not credible, Roanoke City Public Schools posted to Facebook.
“Appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be taken,” the division wrote.
Under a lockdown, or a “hold and secure” as the city school division calls it, the building is secured from outside entry. All outside activities are canceled, students are brought inside, and security personnel monitor the main door.
Instruction of students continued while police investigated the possible threat.
“Roanoke City Public Schools does not tolerate threats or acts of violence. Students and families are reminded to immediately say something if they see or hear something,” the division said in its post.
“At the same time, we also ask families to talk with their child about the consequences of making threats, such as the potential cancellation of school-related and athletic events, should these threats continue.”
