New Delhi: In a major development that promises to give some relief to taxpayers. The deadline for filing ITR has been extended again. Now the final date for filing ITR has been moved to 16 September 2025. This information has been given by the Finance Ministry. This is the second time that the ITR filing deadline has been extended.
It is important to note that several chartered accountants and taxpayers had been continuously complaining about server issues timeouts glitches and several other problems on the ITR portal. Considering this the last date for filing ITR has been extended by one more day.
The Modi government made this decision late at night.
Who needs to file ITR?
People receiving salary and pension
People earning income from house property
People earning income from lottery horse races etc. also need to file ITR
Anyone who has invested in unlisted equity even once during the financial year should also file ITR
Any individual who is a director of a company
People earning from capital gains should also file ITR
What did the department write on X?
The Income Tax Department in a post on X wrote: The original last date for filing ITR for Assessment Year 2025–26 was 31 July 2025. It was extended to 15 September. The CBDT has now decided to further extend the last date for filing ITR for Assessment Year 2025–26 from 15 September to 16 September.
It was also mentioned that ITR portal maintenance was carried out between 12 midnight and 2:30 AM on 15–16 September. Earlier the deadline for filing ITR for Assessment Year 2025-26 was July 31 2025 which was extended to September 15 2025. This is the second time the department has extended the deadline.
