Medical Examiner IDs victims in fatal Julian and Santee crashes

Authorities have named two San Diego-area residents who lost their lives over the last week in traffic crashes.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday, Alfredo Trevino, 46, of Vista lost control of the motorcycle he was riding on state Route 79 in Julian, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

The southbound two-wheeler veered into oncoming traffic near Harrison Park Road and collided with an oncoming 2021 Toyota 4Runner, killing Trevino, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics took the woman who had been riding on the back of the motorcycle to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries, CHP public affairs Officer Jasmine Lopez said. The driver of the SUV, a 29-year-old Julian woman, and her 56-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries, Lopez said.

On Labor Day, a pileup on a thoroughfare in Santee led to the death of a man who lived in the community, the medical examiner reported. Curtis Van Atta Jr., 50, was driving a sedan that collided with other vehicles and struck a utility pole in the 8900 block of Carlton Hills Boulevard shortly after 11 a.m. on Sept 1.

Paramedics took Van Atta to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where he was pronounced dead two days later.
