The Green Bay Packers had two tough NFC games at Lambeau Field to open the regular season, and they beat the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders. Now, it’s a completely different style of game.On Sunday, the Packers face an AFC team in the Cleveland Browns, it’s the first road game of the season, and an opponent that lost its first two games.Brandon Little, the Browns’ beat writer for A to Z Sports, helps us understand how the team is playing, and what the Packers have to prioritize to win the game in Ohio.
Everyone knows Myles Garrett, but the Browns’ defense hasn’t had great results beyond him early on. What else should concern Matt LaFleur in this matchup?
The Browns have a strange history of pulling off wins they shouldn’t after a string of disappointing outings. Cleveland is a tough place to play—it always has been, no matter how good or bad the team is. The Browns will look to keep playing solid defense and get back to running the ball effectively. If rookie backs Judkins and Dylan Sampson can get going, it could open up the offense and force the Packers to defend more than just the pass that they’ll surely be expecting. The offense managed to move the ball in Week 1, even if it didn’t translate into many points, thanks to contributions from their young players. If the previously mentioned rookies, along with tight end Harold Fannin Jr., can step up again, it could inject much-needed energy into the team. Defensively, Cleveland has been put in tough positions by offensive miscues. They held Baltimore to just 242 total yards but still gave up 41 points thanks to two turnovers, a defensive touchdown, and multiple short fields. Through two weeks, the Browns have outgained their opponents 649–383 but still sit at 0–2. They’ll be hoping for a performance similar to their 2023 upset of the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3.
Does Joe Flacco actually give the Browns the best chance to win now over Dillon Gabriel?
Prior to the season, I believed the Browns would likely roll with Flacco as long as possible, largely because of their grueling early schedule. After facing the Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens, and now the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland will see the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions next. The Browns’ offensive line is a shell of what it once was, and putting a rookie out there this early doesn’t seem fair. Flacco, at age 40, isn’t mobile, but he gets the ball out quick enough—and the Browns are comfortable with that. His ability to push the ball downfield, even if they haven’t done it much yet, separates him from what Gabriel is likely to provide when he takes the field. For now, it still feels best to stick with Flacco, perhaps pulling the plug around Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins.
What should the Packers expect from Quinshon Judkins after his first NFL game?
Cleveland limited Judkins to just 20 snaps (27 percent) against the Ravens, though he still got the ball 13 times in his NFL debut. With only two practices under his belt, Judkins finished with 10 carries for 61 yards and three catches for 10 yards against Baltimore. It was a promising debut, though the Browns weren’t able to run much after halftime due to the deficit they faced. Flacco has attempted 45 passes in each of his first two games, and the Browns are setting themselves up for failure any time they have to drop back that often. Kevin Stefanski hinted that Judkins’ workload will increase this week—I’d expect him to reach closer to 75 percent of his full usage against the Packers with a full week of practice.“Obviously, we’ll get him in here, get a lift, get treatment, see how his body’s feeling,” Stefanski stated. “But I think he’s certainly capable of doing more, and we’ll treat it just like we did last week—we’ll see how he comes through the week and make those types of decisions as the week goes on.”
