The University of Calicut is planning to set up a football stadium as a joint venture with the State government on its campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.
A note presented by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran at the Syndicate meeting held on Wednesday said that Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs V. Abdurahiman had recently discussed the possibility of the university and the government jointly constructing a state-of-the-art stadium. A sum of ₹125 crore would be made available from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, the note added. Syndicate sources said that the meeting decided to give in-principle approval to the proposal.
An earlier plan was to build an international stadium on public-private partnership mode. Mr. Raveendran and Syndicate members aligned with the Congress, Indian Union Muslim League and the BJP had opposed it.
Other decisions
The Syndicate meeting decided to approach the High Court seeking permission to start distance education programmes approved by the University Grants Commission. Steps would be taken to launch online undergraduate and postgraduate courses from 2026 July.
A policy document would be prepared to set up off-shore campuses of the university in foreign countries. Steps would be taken to get no-objection certificates from the Home Ministry, Ministry of External Affairs, and the State government.
Students’ union elections would be held in affiliated colleges on October 9. New students’ unions would be formed at the Institute of Tribal Studies and Research, Chethalayam, Wayanad, and Dr. John Matthai Centre at Aranattukara, Thrissur. Till now, these campuses were part of the departmental students’ union on the university campus. The Syndicate meeting also approved the revised guidelines for granting fellowship to researchers in its authorised research centres.
