Gujarat has maintained its status as a prohibition state, a sumptuary law banning the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol, since its formation in 1960. This dry state status is tied to the legacy of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in Gujarat and was an advocate for the prohibition of alcohol.
In 2023, the Government made a partial exemption allowing liquor consumption within the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) to foster a global business environment. Despite the allowance, cases of illegal liquor trade in the city often come into the limelight.
800 Liquor Bottles In Ahmedabad House
In a recent incident in August 2025, Ahmedabad police allegedly discovered nearly 800 liquor bottles hidden in a residential house, specifically in the walls and beneath a toilet seat in the Bareja taluka. This discovery highlights the ongoing issue of illicit liquor trafficking in Gujarat, a state with strict prohibition laws where alcohol possession is illegal.
A video of the same is currently being circulated on social media. It depicts an official pulling the toilet seat and discovering a secret passage beneath.

How Did Social Media React?
In no time, the comment section was flooded with reactions from several users. While many asked to make the alcohol trade legal in the state to avoid such instances, others made hilarious comments.
An Instagram user wrote, “Technologyaaaa.” Another one commented, “Attached Bar-throom ke saath milega aapko flat.” One of them shared, “The only thing that generally has an indefinite shelf life, they don’t go bad.”
A user commented, “Make alcohol sales legal and tax each transaction.” Another comment reads, “Plumbing tips and tricks.” A Person wrote, “Please make it official in the state so that people don’t pull out their alcohol from this at least.”
Well, this is not the first time something like that has grabbed the attention of the viewers. Earlier, the Gujarat state government’s data revealed that the police seized liquor, both country-made and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), worth Rs 212 crore in two years till December 2022.
