Five new pieces are being installed in The RiverFront Sculpture Garden, a planned rotation that is part of the long-term vision for the area in the Gene Leahy Mall.
The latest sculptures in the garden along Douglas Street have been removed and will be swapped out, thanks to MECA’s partnership with KANEKO and the International Sculpture Center.
“We’re so excited to celebrate and highlight new artists, and for the community to come and enjoy the new sculptures as well.” said Katie Bassett, MECA vice president of parks.
A group of jurors from the International Sculpture Center with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise suggested several potential artists, which were narrowed down and presented to MECA for the final selection.
The new sculptures being installed through Sept. 24 are Sneek by Jeffie Brewer, Raindance by Peter Millet, Gathering Currents by Daniel Roberts, Lexell’s Comet by Scott Hocking and Untitled by Robert Koch.

They will be displayed until the next art rotation in three years.
Chris Kircher, KANEKO’s executive director, said it’s not just an installation. It’s cultivating meaningful relationships between art, space and community.
“This dedication reflects a profound understanding that public art has the power to inspire and enrich our collective experience,” he said in a release.
The sculptures being replaced are Helios and Portent by Linda Fleming, Walking Flower Times the Power of Five by James Surls, Love Exists by John Clement and Aeolis by Bruce Beasley.
To celebrate the new installations, The RiverFront is hosting a panel discussion about the sculptures Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. in the sculpture garden.
