Bryan Health time capsule treasures revealed

Bryan Health opened a time capsule from 1987 as part of its 100 year celebration.
A lot has changed at the hospital, including it’s name. But some things, like foundational medical equipment and Husker pride haven’t changed.
Bryan Health’s glimpse into the past included:
* A nurse’s hat: The time capsule had a nurse’s hat along with a pink smock.
* An IV bag: Katie Speer, a clinical educator at the hospital, said the IV bag was fairly similar to what they use today.
* A menu: Back in the 1980s tacos were $1 at the cafeteria and a cup of soup was about $0.50.
* A service pin: After working 100 hours in the hospital, people received a pin. Gem stones were added to the pin for more hours.
* Electrodes: Used for cardiac monitoring, the electrodes connected to people to track a pulse.
* A brick: Taken from an energy station, the brick dates back to the hospital’s founding in 1926.
* Restraining straps: Used in the psychiatric unit, the restraints were signed by hospital workers.
* “We can’t cure Husker fever”: The time capsule also had a bumper sticker with the slogan “We can’t cure Husker fever.”
One thing not in the time capsule: an ashtray.
Harold Lyon was on the maintenance staff when the time capsule was placed and still works at the hospital. While he was working to open the container he said that should have been included because the rules for smoking in the hospital had changed over the years.
Since the time capsule was sealed, Bryan Memorial Hospital acquired Lincoln General Hospital and Bryan Health has added satellite locations across the state.
