Forget airport security lines and crowded boarding gates—this autumn, travellers from Rome have a new way to roll straight into Oktoberfest spirit. Italy’s state-owned tourist rail company, FS Treni Turistici Italiani, has launched the Munich Express, a special night train designed to turn the long ride into part of the festival itself. Also called the Espresso Monaco, the train turns a 16-hour night ride into a festival warm-up. Passengers are treated to freshly poured beer, sausages, pretzels, and Bavarian tunes as the train passes Florence, Bologna, Verona, and the Alps. Onboard, passengers can choose from basic seats, couchettes, or private cabins, including double compartments for couples and four-berth spaces for groups. The idea is to make the trip as stress-free as possible, while letting the Oktoberfest buzz build with every passing station. Timings and Fares The Munich Express will run only on two weekends during the 2025 Oktoberfest season. Trains depart from Rome Termini at 8 pm on 26 September and 3 October, arriving in Munich at 2:30 pm the following day. Return services leave Munich at 2:30 pm on Sundays, reaching Rome early Monday morning. Northern Italy passengers can also hop on at stops such as Verona, Trento, Bolzano, and Brennero. Tickets start at €99 one way, with discounted round trips priced at €89 each way. Seats can be booked through Railbook. Beyond Munich Munich may remain the epicenter of Oktoberfest, but other German cities are increasingly drawing festivalgoers with their own versions of the celebration. Berlin in particular has been attracting attention for offering the same beer halls, brass bands, and Bavarian food at a lower price point, making it a growing alternative for those looking to celebrate without splurging. All aboard for Oktoberfest With Alpine views outside the window and Bavarian cheer inside the carriages, the Munich Express offers more than just a journey—it turns the trip itself into part of the party. For festivalgoers, Oktoberfest now starts long before the beer tents of Munich.
