A British holidaymaker is battling for her life in an Ibiza hospital after collapsing from a suspected heat stroke in her hotel bathroom. Sue Adams, 62, flew to the stunning Spanish Balearic island with her husband James Adams on August 29 for a week-long sun-soaked getaway. Upon arrival, James recounted how they spent their first day lounging by the pool and enjoying an evening meal before heading back to their hotel room around 9:30pm. However, when Sue got up to use the loo at 4am, James was alerted by a noise and decided to check on her. To his utter shock, he found Sue unconscious on the bathroom floor, unresponsive with a swollen, bruised right eye. Without wasting a moment, the 66 year old placed his wife in the recovery position and dashed to the hotel reception to summon an ambulance. But when the paramedics arrived, James says Sue began to ‘convulse’ and was immediately whisked off to the hospital for further treatment. At the hospital, Sue underwent a full body scan which revealed no internal bleeding but two minor fractures – one in her face and another in her lower lumbar area, reports the Mirror . Sue was subsequently placed on a ventilator and kept under sedation to aid her recovery. She has now been in an induced coma for three weeks, battling a lung infection, and doctors have recently informed James that her kidneys are failing. A recent medical update revealed that they are attempting to gradually bring Sue out of sedation, but she will require a tracheostomy due to her prolonged time on a ventilator. According to James, the doctors are currently unable to determine the cause of Sue’s illness, but he suspects that heat stroke may have caused her to faint, potentially leading to a head injury from the bathroom sink, which in turn triggered a seizure. As James hopes for his wife’s swift recovery, he is facing financial struggles, having to cover the costs of accommodation, food, and transportation to and from the hospital. In response, one of James’ sons has established a GoFundMe page to alleviate the financial burden on the pensioner. James expressed his concern about potentially having to return to the UK without his wife and is hopeful that he can raise sufficient funds to remain by her side during her recovery. James, a resident of Loftus in North Yorkshire, stated: “I initially put it down to heat stroke. Sue is quite prone to dehydration in a hot environment and has fainted before. “I did bring some hydration stuff with me for this reason but I failed to give her any in the evening. “Looking back now on reflection neither of us drank enough on that first day in the sun so I thought it was probably down to dehydration. Dehydration doesn’t cause the seizure or convulsion but it may have caused her to pass out and become disoriented and dizzy. “I think then when she banged her head severely, I think on the basin, this could have contributed to the seizure. It’s all assumptions. Equally, the bathroom floor was wet so she could have slipped on this. The incident was unwitnessed. I was shocked [when I found Sue on the floor] and I went into a bit of a panic. I was saying her name and trying to get a response from her. “The nurse side of me kicked in and I put her in the recovery position and kept talking to her. But, at the same time I was desperately worried and frightened that she had done some serious damage. I squatted down beside her and was stroking her hair to reassure her but she couldn’t hear me because she was unconscious. The emotions now. I’ve got tears in my eyes telling you this.” James revealed that Sue’s medical expenses are being covered by the NHS thanks to a temporary Global Health Insurance Card [GHIC] obtained through the British consulate. However, this doesn’t include any costs for him to stay in Spain while Sue is receiving treatment, which is costing him roughly 60 euros per hospital visit and around 1,000 euros a week for accommodation near the hospital. He is now aiming to gather funds through a GoFundMe page set up by his son, which will assist him in staying abroad with his wife while she recovers. James stated: “There wasn’t an infection when she went in there so it’s a bit of mystery really. We are hoping to get her home sooner than October as it is costing me money to stay here. “My biggest worry is, if I run out of money I will have to return home without her. We’re not a wealthy family by any stretch. I’ve got my state pension and some support from my family too. “They’re supportive but their help is limited. We initiated the GoFundMe to help me stay here [with Sue], but if we manage to raise enough to bring Sue back to the UK, that would be fantastic. I would be immensely relieved to have her home.” For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters .
