Brain-eating amoeba: Fourth recovery from amoebic meningoencephalitis reported in Kerala’s Kozhikode in recent weeks

Another patient has recovered from amoebic meningoencephalitis at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, taking the total number of people recovering from the infection in Kerala in recent weeks to four.

According to sources, a 11-year-old girl from Chelari in Malappuram was discharged on Wednesday (September 17, 2025).

Her body fluid samples tested negative twice in a span of 15 days. She had been undergoing treatment at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health wing of the hospital.

In recent days, another three patients, including two children, had recovered and discharged from the hospital.

At present, nine patients are undergoing treatment at the Kozhikode MCH and another patient is at a private hospital in Kozhikode city.

At least six people have succumbed to the infection in Kozhikode since August 14.

Amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but fatal brain infection caused by free-living amoebae found in freshwater, lakes and rivers, has emerged as a public health concern in Kerala.
