Channel 7 sports presenter made redundant in shock axing

Earlier this week Channel 7 sports anchor Matt Carmichael was made redundant in a surprise decision. He’ll farewell Seven following coverage of next month’s Bathurst 1000 Supercars motor race.

Carmichael, 44, had been with Seven for 23 years and was a respected member of the newsroom, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Station management informed Carmichael of their decision on Monday, with Seven news boss Ray Ruka telling staff in an email: “Matt will now be taking a well-deserved extended break. Matt leaves as a script craftsman.

“Matt has worked at Seven for two decades but, sadly, that will come to an end next month, fittingly after Bathurst 1000.

“We wish Matt all the best and look forward to celebrating his final weeks.”

Carmichael had previously worked on Seven Morning News, Seven Afternoon News and Sunrise, and covered major sporting events for the network.

He covered the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, the Australian Open and Bathurst 1000.

He is a previous winner of the Sport Australia award for best coverage of sport for people with a disability.

Carmichael interviewed the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant at the 2008 Olympics and got swimming coach’s Dean Boxall reaction to Ariarne Titmus winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Born in Sydney, Carmichael studied a Bachelor of Journalism at Queensland University of Technology before joining Seven.
