Vijayakumar from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, has lovingly maintained his Bajaj Chetak scooter, which he purchased in 1991, treating it as a cherished family member and travelling companion. Back then, people often had to wait years to get hold of this popular scooter, known for its robust build, easy maintenance, and long lifespan. (Local18)
Even 53 years after its introduction, Chetak scooters remain a common sight across India and are considered treasures by antique enthusiasts. Vijayakumar has been riding his Bajaj Chetak for 30 years and shared his experiences. He said, “This scooter has been part of our family for years. When my wife worked at Thanjavur Medical College, I would drop our two children at school, and then she would call me on this scooter to travel back and forth.” (Local18)
He added, “It has a spare tyre at the back and is very safe for passengers riding behind. The gear lever is hand-operated, and the brake is foot-operated, typical of that era. Even now, I consider it quite a luxurious vehicle. You could say it’s like a mini car with many features”, he continued. “There’s enough space at the front for a helmet and storage compartments on both sides.” (Local18)
Vijayakumar recalled, “We’ve taken this scooter on numerous hill trips to places like Kodaikanal and Ooty, and it never struggled with the climbs.” He noted, “Its resale value is quite high today. Antique collectors often ask if I’d sell it and whether it’s still available. Even now, it delivers 45 kilometres per litre”, he said. “Despite the many modern vehicles on the road, people often turn to admire this scooter.” (Local18)
“In fact, it has become my identity here in Thanjavur”, Vijayakumar concluded.
