A North Lanarkshire Council chief is leaving the local authority after being handed a top job in Ayrshire. Former sports journalist Stephen Penman is the new Chief Executive of South Ayrshire Council and will take up the role when leaving his position as Strategy and Engagement chief at North Lanarkshire later this year. Penman, who grew up in Troon, will earn almost £170,000 as he bids to steer the South Ayrshire ship back on course following a chaotic year which has seen the council’s CEO and leader both quit. Before entering local government, he was sports editor at the Sunday Herald and later became the paper’s deputy editor. He will take up the new role of Chief Executive after being appointed by interim chief executive Cleland Sneddon, who was CEO at South Lanarkshire Council. Mr Sneddon said: “It’s been a pleasure to contribute to the council and work with some wonderful staff over the last few months. “Stephen is a proven leader who brings a range of skills and experience to the role of Chief Executive. “I’m confident that he will make a positive impact and continue to drive the council forward. I’d like to wish Stephen the very best in his new role.” Mr Penman said: “It is a privilege to be asked to lead the dedicated staff of South Ayrshire Council. “Having grown up here, South Ayrshire is a very special place for me, with outstanding places, first-class education opportunities and enormous economic potential. “The council’s vision is a compelling one and I look forward to leading the organisation with drive and passion to deliver the best possible results for the people who live in, visit and work in South Ayrshire.
