A man from the US visiting Kolkata found himself in a terrifying situation when a local taxi driver tried to scam him. The situation escalated further when another man entered the taxi and made a threatening remark.
The incident first came to light in May, when Dustin, a travel content creator, shared the entire episode on YouTube. He had come to India to explore its culture and sights, but after landing in Kolkata, he faced a troubling encounter that he captured on video.
Wrong Direction And Fare Dispute
In the video titled “Taxi Driver in Kolkata Tried to Cheat and Threaten Me,” Dustin claimed that he clearly informed the taxi driver about his hotel destination, which was Great Western in Park Street. But the driver took him 15 km in the opposite direction to a different hotel.
“I showed you the hotel first, we agreed to this, and then you took me to the wrong hotel,” Dustin could be heard saying to the driver.
The driver initially asked for Rs 700. When Dustin refused to pay because he had been taken to the wrong location, the driver admitted the mistake but raised the fare, saying, “Okay, sir, it will be Rs 900 to Park Street now.” Dustin refused, insisting on the originally agreed Rs 700 which led to an argument.

Threats From Another Man
At this point, another man wearing a red shirt approached and sat beside the original driver. He demanded Rs 1,000 and threatened in Bengali, “I have connections with the mafia, I’ll drag him to a lonely place and break his a**.” The entire exchange was caught on camera.
Eventually, the two persuaded Dustin to take another cab to reach Park Street. Before leaving, the man in red added an extra Rs 100 for “parking and petrol” that brought the total fare to Rs 800. Dustin remarked while filming, “I should’ve been at the hotel by now, but I’ll probably be in this taxi for an hour and 30 minutes.”
In his caption, Dustin explained that he hadn’t planned to film at the airport because he was tired, but he started recording after being taken to the wrong location. “From this point forward, I will never use random taxi drivers from the airport, always Uber,” he wrote.
He also noted, “Uber charges somewhere between Rs 500 and Rs 600 for the same route. I agreed to Rs 700 for convenience, but this is just too much.”
Despite the incident, he added, “I’ve had a great time in India so far. This won’t make me hate the country, it’s just something you deal with in taxis and airports in many places.”
What Happened Next?
Following the viral video, the Bidhannagar police arrested the taxi driver and his accomplice. The arrested men were identified as Manoj Roy (52) and Alamgir Molla (34). A suo motu case was registered at NSCBI Airport Police Station, according to authorities.
