Over a span of five months in 2022, a man took voyeuristic videos of 14 victims, including women who were showering at a gym he was working at.
On Sept 10, Javier Lee Kah Chuan, 21, pleaded guilty to six charges of voyeurism, with another eight charges to be taken into consideration during sentencing.
The judge called for a probation suitability report for Lee, who is expected to be sentenced in October.
Lee’s voyeuristic acts took place between July and November 2022, and he struck at places including Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, a coffee shop in Jurong, a bar in Prinsep Street and a gym in Farrer Park.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mavis Ng said that in September and November 2022, while Lee was working at Body Fit Training (BFT) Farrer Park, he took voyeuristic videos of three women showering on separate occasions.
He also took a video of another woman using the toilet at the gym.
On Sept 15, 2022, a staff member at BFT Farrer Park informed the police of a possible case of voyeurism after a woman reported that she saw a mobile phone appearing in and out of a toilet cubicle she was in.
The police arrived at the gym and interviewed the victim, but Lee’s acts did not come to light then.
Separately, Lee took videos of victims using the toilet at a bar in Prinsep Street in July 2022. One video had even been set to capture a victim in slow motion.
On Nov 27, 2022, while Lee was at Taman Jurong Park for a sports competition, he saw two of his female friends walk towards a coffee shop nearby to use the toilet.
He followed them and recorded them from outside the toilet cubicles.
He repeated his actions twice that day with other victims and was subsequently caught by one of them. That victim took Lee’s phone and reported the incident to the police.
In response to queries from The Straits Times, a spokesman for BFT Farrer Park said Lee is no longer employed at the gym.
The spokesman said Lee had been employed under BFT Farrer Park’s previous management, which changed hands in December 2024, after the offences were committed.
Those convicted of voyeurism can be jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or receive any combination of such punishments.
