Faculty, students react to leadership change following backlash over campus policing, protest
DETROIT – Kimberly Espy is out as President at Wayne State University, and Richard Bierschbach is in.
This came after Espy suddenly stepped down after what some called a turbulent time.
Bierschbach says he realizes the journey will be difficult, but he plans to lead the university to his full capacity.
“She wasn’t seen around campus. We thought she was turning the campus into a police state essentially after the Palestinian encampment after that was broken up,” said professor and faculty union president, Jennifer Sheridan Moss.
Some Students and alumni feel the same as Taylor James.
“I think there’s been a lot of groups offended by the president. I’m hoping that the translation is smooth, and I’m hoping that the next president does better by the students or the community,” said James.

Espy was the first woman to be named president, taking the position in August of 2023.
In her space, at least for the time being, as interim president, Richard Bierschbach, who recently served as a professor and dean of the campus’s law school, will be in charge.
“I know it seems like a challenging time. It’s a challenging time in all of higher education,” said Bierschbach.
Bierschbach says he realizes the journey will be difficult, but he plans to lead the university to his full capacity.
“I can’t promise to be perfect. I know I’m not gonna to be perfect, but I can promise to do my level best,” Bierschbach said.
