Late CofC professor Heather Hall, who died in Portugal, to be honored Friday on Charleston campus

CHARLESTON — An education professor who died while traveling in Portugal for an academic conference will be honored Sept. 19 during a memorial service at the College of Charleston.

Friends and family will gather at 1 p.m. in the Cistern Yard — located in the center of campus at 66 George St. in front of Randolph Hall — to remember the fun-loving and compassionate Heather Hall. Before becoming a professor focused on special education and literacy, the 51-year-old was a longtime Charleston County schoolteacher.

Known for her love of international travel, Hall told friends she was excited to explore Portugal this month. But on Sept. 3, she was killed with 15 other people when a cable car broke loose on a steep hill in Lisbon and crashed in an uncontrolled descent.

Hall’s death stunned and saddened her many colleagues and friends in Charleston and beyond. Many praised her as a caring and spirited person devoted to literacy efforts and the well-being of people with disabilities.

“Join us as we honor Dr. Heather Hall — devoted mother, beloved daughter and sister, cherished friend, passionate educator, and fearless adventurer who touched countless lives with her boundless love and infectious joy,” said an invitation shared by Hall’s family. “Dr. Hall lived every moment with an open heart and an unshakeable belief that anything was possible.”

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those celebrating Hall’s life to donate to:

HEART: An Inclusive Arts Community, which focuses on artists with disabilities, or,The College of Charleston, which has created the Heather Hall Memorial Scholarship.
