The Manipur government has announced that all schools and colleges will stay closed today, September 17, because of heavy rain and floods across the Imphal valley and other areas of the state. This step has been taken to protect the safety and well-being of students and teachers.
As per media reports, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said that continuous heavy rain has led to several landslides in different districts, causing damage to roads, houses, and farmland. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted more rainfall for the next two days.
State officials shared that two rivers broke their embankments in different parts of Manipur’s Imphal Valley on Sunday night, flooding huge stretches of farmland and residential zones. A relief camp at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex was badly waterlogged.
The Iril river overflowed at Kshetrigao, submerging farmlands, homes, and roads in Imphal East district. Meanwhile, the Wangjing river was flowing above the danger mark, flooding the Sangaiyumpham and Wangjing areas in Thoubal district.
