Dallas Cowboys Showing Lack of Interest in Stephon Gilmore

The Dallas Cowboys won a wild Week 2 game against the New York Giants as Brandon Aubrey kicked a 46-yard field goal to win 40-37 in overtime. While they were able to get the win, the team had major defensive issues. They couldn’t stop Russell Wilson and the Giants passing game at all, as he threw for 450 yards. The Cowboys are dealing with injuries in the secondary, as DaRon Bland was out for the game against the Giants.Despite dealing with the injuries, Jerry Jones said that the team wasn’t bring in any free agents like former Cowboy Stephon Gilmore.Gilmore is currently a free agent, but he is a guy who will get heavy consideration to be in the Hall of Fame. He starred for many years in Buffalo and New England, but he played for the Cowboys in 2023.In that season, he set a career-high with 68 tackles, while also having two interceptions. The Cowboys had one of the top defenses in the league that year, finishing fifth in points allowed (18.5PPG) and fifth in yards (299.7 yards). As talented as he is as a player, what made Gilmore such a special player was his IQ and leadership abilities.Last season, Gilmore was on the Vikings, and he finished with 56 tackles and one interception. With Micah Parsons no longer in Dallas, the Cowboys aren’t able to get enough pressure on the quarterback. This is forcing the secondary to have to guard for longer extended times, and that was painfully obvious on Sunday. Not having Bland out there played a huge role in that game, as he is one of the better defensive backs in the NFL. The Cowboys in late August signed him to a four-year, $96 million contract that made him one of the highest paid cornerbacks in the NFL.Bland isn’t the only secondary player that Dallas is missing, as rookie cornerback Shavon Revel could be back in Week 4 after he gets off the Non-Football Injury List. He was on the list due to tearing an ACL during college at East Carolina. The Cowboys have high expectations for him, as they took him in the third round of this past year’s draft.Jones has always done things his own way, and that is never going to change. Right now, the Cowboys are standing pat when it comes to bringing secondary help. For more on the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL, visit Newsweek Sports.
