Yankees Make Trade, Send Marshall Toole to Rays

The New York Yankees completed an earlier trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, announcing one of their minor league outfielders as the player to be named later in the deal that brought infielder Jose Caballero to the Bronx.
Outfielder Marshall Toole, who was batting .305 in 96 games with the Single-A Tampa Tarpons, is going to the Rays. Ironically, the Rays have been playing their home games out of George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa — the Tarpons’ home field — so Toole won’t have to go far following the trade.

Toole, a former Wofford College standout, was a 15th-round draft pick by the Yankees in 2024.
The Yankees originally acquired Caballero on July 1 for center fielder Everson Pereira and either a player to be named later or cash. Caballero has been a hit ever since, effectively displacing struggling shortstop Anthony Volpe as the starter at the position.
If Caballero continues slashing .256/.356/.492 through the end of the postseason, the cost of Pereira and Toole will be a small one to pay for a player who is lengthening the Yankees’ starting lineup.

Caballero, 29, carried a light bat and played a variety of positions with the Seattle Mariners (2023) and Rays (2024-25) prior to the trade. In addition to his surprising bat, Caballero has made only one error at shortstop in 10 games at the position since the trade.
Toole has a .406 OBP and .479 slugging percentage this season, in addition to 44 steals in 50 attempts.
