Mark Owens, the president and chief executive officer of Greater Winston-Salem Inc., told a gathering of about 250 local leaders on Wednesday that a fundraising campaign to help Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will be officially launched on Thursday with a starting matching gift of $500,000 from a local couple.
Owens made the announcement at the annual State of Education meeting at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. After interim Superintendent Catty Moore gave the crowd an overview of the school district’s bleak financial situation, Owens called on the community to rally behind the school district, citing its importance to the area’s economic health.
A website, allinforourschools.org, will launch on Thursday, Owens said. The Winston-Salem Foundation and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Education Foundation are among the groups behind the effort, he said.
A local couple, Mike and Wendy Brenner, is donating a matching gift of $500,000, Owens said.
The campaign will have different funds for donations of supplies and books.
“We’re hearing stories about running out of ink and teachers not having supplies,” Owens said. “You can work towards that. You can work toward books in schools.”
