Peter Navarro Targets India Again, Hours Before Top Washington Negotiator's Visit to Discuss Trade Deal

Washington: Donald Trump’s trade advisor, who has been accused by former US NSA John Bolton of creating a rift between India-US ties, targeted New Delhi again but with a changed tone, a day before top Washington negotiator Branden Lynch visit to India to discuss a trade deal. During an interview with CNBC, Peter Navarro spoke on India-US trade talks, saying that India is coming to the table and mentioned PM Modi’s conciliatory and constructive tweet, as well as President Donald Trump’s response to it. “India is coming to the table. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent out a very conciliatory, nice, constructive tweet, and President Trump responded to that. We’ll see that this is how this works,” Navarro said. However, Navarro did mention India’s high tariffs, saying, “We know that on the rare side, they have the highest tariffs of any major country. They have very high non-tariff barriers. We have to deal with that like we’re dealing with every other country that does that.” Peter Navarro’s Recent Anti-India Rants Peter Navarro has been very critical of India during trade negotiations between the two countries. He has, on multiple occasions, accused India of running a profiteering scheme by purchasing Russian oil and selling it to the world including the United States, saying India was funding Moscow to continue the war in Ukraine, and that the road to peace in the war-torn region goes through New Delhi. Donald Trump’s Former NSA Blames Navarro For India-US Rift The White House advisor received heavy backlash for his anti-India remarks and was even blamed by Donald Trump’s former NSA, John Bolton, for ruining the relationship between New Delhi and Washington. Peter Navarro justified Trump’s 50 per cent tariffs on India and attempted to create a civil rift in the country by claiming that ‘Brahmins were profiteering’ when India was purchasing Russian oil. Though Navarro has been blaming India for funding the Ukraine war, the real reason for the conflict is the expansion of NATO towards the east, with Kyiv seeking membership, posing a security threat to Russia. But the United States, ignoring what truly triggered the war, wants to appear saintly and blames everyone else but itself for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
