The Lincoln Police Department responded to a potential swatting call at Lincoln Northeast High School on Wednesday morning.
The front office at Northeast received a call at 8:22 a.m. Wednesday from an unknown caller who made vague threats, saying there was a weapon and hostage situation in a classroom at the school, according to a Lincoln police news release. The caller then abruptly hung up.
The school quickly determined the information was inaccurate. The school’s resource officer, along with several other LPD officers who responded to the school, secured the school “out of an abundance of caution” and swept the campus for any signs of a threat.
The high school was quickly cleared and no threats were found, likely indicating the report was a swatting incident, meaning a false report was made to trigger a large emergency response.
The school did not enter any secured status under Lincoln Public Schools’ standard response protocol.
Law enforcement planned to stay at the school for the remainder of the day.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600, report online at lincolncrimestoppers.com or download the free P3 app.
Doane University in Crete went through a similar situation last month when the campus was placed on lockdown following false reports of a possible armed suspect in one of its buildings. Law enforcement lifted lockdown notices after determining the call was likely a swatting incident.
