'Under-the-radar' market town that's 'catnip for families' is named UK's best place to live

A charming town on the edge of the Cotswolds has been crowned the best place to live in the UK. If you’re after the allure of the Cotswolds without the influx of tourists, then this Gloucestershire gem is just the ticket. Dursley was named the best place to live by luxury UK news site Muddy Stilettos, and it’s not hard to see why.

Situated on the southern fringe of the Cotswolds, the town boasts a vibrant community of independent artists and an array of delightful pubs. Plus, recent investments have given the town a fresh new look.

Giving it the title, Muddy Stilettos wrote: “Hugged by lush green hills and sitting on the Cotswold Way, Dursley offers all the perks of a buzzing market town with the added bonus of breathtaking views on your doorstep.” It says it has “a strong arty streak” which “attracts a community of creators, crafters and artists, with two award-winning arts hubs”.

It also says the town centre “is a lovely place to wander, centred around a picturesque 18th century town hall” and calls it “catnip for families wanting to settle in the county” because you get Cotswolds life without the eye-watering price tag of many of its towns and villages. It is also well connected to Bristol and London, has plenty of places to eat and a big leisure centre.

The town has seen a revamp with the construction of new homes at the former Listers factory site and £30 million pumped into the local school. These enhancements have made Dursley a hot spot for young families looking to put down roots. With excellent connections to both London and Bristol, it offers the perfect blend of rural tranquillity and city buzz, reports the Express.

There’s also a wealth of activities for children. Berkeley Castle is just a stone’s throw away, and Westonbirt Arboretum is nearby too., with over 2,500 types of trees and the popular SkyWalk that takes you up into the treetops.

Muddy Stilettos’ list of the best places to live in the UK also includes Frome, tucked away in Somerset’s Mendip Hills. This quaint town is an ideal spot for young families and those seeking a peaceful yet fashionable lifestyle. It’s brimming with artisan shops, delightful cafes and even boasts its own independent cinema.

Frome has a vibrant, thriving community with a plethora of activities to engage in. The annual Frome Festival offers 10 days of music and culture, while the Frome Carnival and the Frome Window Wanderland provide unique experiences, allowing you to stroll through the town and admire the illuminated and decorated window displays.

For a day trip, the scenic town of Bath is nearby, and Longleat is just a stone’s throw away. Plus, there’s stunning surrounding countryside to explore at your leisure.
