The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will look to open the season with a second consecutive victory when they face the 0-1 Houston Texans at Houston’s NRG Stadium for a “Monday Night Football” clash on Sept. 15.
During a recent appearance on Buccaneers Radio Network, Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield revealed that he doesn’t love playing in prime time.
Why Baker Mayfield prefers afternoon contests
“I’m personally not a fan of later games,” Mayfield admitted, as shared by the JoeBucsFan website. “By the end of the work week, you’re like, ‘Ok, I’ve seen enough tape. I can’t watch any more of this defense. I’m not going to learn anything new at this point. Because if I learn something new, I obviously didn’t do my job throughout the week.’ It’s just that long waiting game on game day. I’d rather wake up [and] go play because you’re just so amped up and ready for it.”
According to JoeBucsFan, the Buccaneers have gone 3-9 in night games since Todd Bowles took over as head coach in 2022. In January of this year, Tampa Bay suffered a 23-20 prime-time loss to the Washington Commanders in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
More recently, Mayfield guided the Buccaneers on a late game-winning drive to help secure a thrilling 23-20 victory over the Atlanta Falcons this past Sunday. During his chat on Buccaneers Radio Network, he suggested he let first-year offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard down via his play as Tampa Bay scored only 10 points over the opening two quarters of the Atlanta game.
What Baker Mayfield hopes to correct ahead of Week 2
“I wasn’t really in rhythm in the first half, so for that, it really affects playcalling, too,” Mayfield explained. “I mean, too many three-and-outs with decision-making for me. So, hopefully, iron some things out, get it corrected, and go from there. But I thought it was smooth [with Grizzard] other than that. We just got to be able to run the ball better.”
Mayfield rushed for a team-high 39 yards versus the Falcons. That’s a bit of a concern, considering Tampa Bay running back Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving finished last season ranked 10th in the NFL with 1,122 rushing yards. Irving averaged just 2.6 yards per carry on 14 attempts against Atlanta. He’ll look to produce a bounce-back performance in Houston next week.
