Wishaw pub shift manager hailed for leading bar’s fundraising drive

A Wishaw pub shift manager has been hailed for leading the bar’s fundraising efforts. The Wishaw Malt had a reason to celebrate when shift manager Nicola Goldie was nominated as one of three fundraising superheroes from all JD Wetherspoon pubs in the UK. Nicola’s fundraising efforts in The Wishaw Malt saw an incredible £5,600 raised for the Young Lives Vs Cancer campaign last year, bringing the total raised from the popular Wishaw pub to over £56,000, with the pub also currently having raised more than any other JD Wetherspoon pub in Scotland this year. The pub’s contributions have helped JD Wetherspoon to raise an incredible £25 million nationally to support children and young people with cancer and their families. Nicola’s nomination led her to be featured in Young Lives Vs Cancer’s celebratory video to mark the £25 million milestone. Nicola said: “It was a lovely surprise to hear that I had been nominated as a fundraising superhero. “Last year was the pub’s 25th birthday and my colleagues and customers really got behind the fundraising drive to celebrate the milestone. “One of our managers shaved his head and staff ran half marathons and jumped out of planes! “We aimed to raise £2,500 but we smashed that and throughout the year raised over £5,600. Our customers have always rallied behind this cause, whether they are buying a raffle ticket, taking part in our quiz nights or sponsoring our staff, we really couldn’t do it without them.” From the moment of diagnosis, Young Lives vs Cancer’s specialist social workers provide day-to-day support for each child, young person and family. The charity provides accommodation close to hospitals where families can stay together during treatment for free and grants to help families navigate the costs of cancer. Carol Anne McMahon, Senior Partnership Fundraising Manager for Young Lives Vs Cancer, recently visited The Wishaw Malt to present Nicola with a Superhero thank you card, which was designed by 13-year-old cancer patient Amelie, who has directly benefited from JD Wetherspoon’s fundraising through the services provided to her and her family from Young Lives Vs Cancer. Carol Anne said: “Nicola has done an amazing job leading The Wishaw Malt’s fundraising efforts and really is a true fundraising superhero who does an incredible job fundraising to help us be there for thousands of young people with cancer. “We’re so grateful for everything Nicola has done and continues to do, we really can’t thank her enough for her continued support and for playing a significant part in the partnership between JD Wetherspoon and Young Lives Vs Cancer reaching £25 million. “Not all superheroes wear capes! If you’ve ever donated spare change, bought a pin badge, taken part in the regular bonus ball competitions or quiz nights in The Wishaw Malt, you’ve helped make this milestone possible.” To find out more about Young Lives vs Cancer, visit www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk *Don’t miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
