Berhampur: Tampara Lake, a popular tourist destination in Ganjam district of Odisha is reportedly shrinking. According to the locals as well as environmentalists, multiple factors contribute towards this shrinking. The decreasing water levels are attributed to climate change, lack of rainwater storage structures, and absence of check dams. Further, there are allegations that sand from nearby mining operations is also contributing to the lake’s siltation. Here is a report.
Tampara Lake is a freshwater haven nestled near Chhatrapur in Ganjam district. This 300-hectare Ramsar wetland, connected to the Rushikulya River, is not just a tourist hotspot but a vital ecological and economic lifeline.
The lake supports about 60 bird species and 46 fish species, including vulnerable ones. Besides, it plays a crucial role in mitigating floods during monsoons by absorbing excess river water.
The ecological significance of Tampara Lake extends to providing livelihoods for local communities. It supplies water for agriculture and drinking purposes for Chhatrapur. It also reportedly supports fishing activities yielding around 12 tonnes annually.
The lake is also used for water sports and training programs by the Indian Army. And due to all these facilities and benefits, it attracts tourists from across the country and even abroad.
However, Tampara Lake is said to be shrinking due to multiple factors. Decreasing water levels are attributed to climate change, lack of rainwater storage structures, and absence of check dams. There are allegations that sand from nearby mining operations by IREL is contributing to the lake’s siltation.
The consequences of Tampara Lake’s decline are far-reaching. There’s a looming risk of water scarcity, potentially affecting drinking water supply to Chhatrapur and surrounding areas. The economic impact is significant as livelihoods dependent on the lake’s resources are under threat. Ecologically, the damage could harm biodiversity and disrupt ecosystem services.
In response to these challenges, the Ganjam Collector, V. Keerthi Vasan, has assured that soon a solution will be made in this regard.
