Abronye is lucky to have been charged with a misdemeanor rather than a second-degree offense – Lawyer

Private legal practitioner Anokye Frimpong has stated that Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, is fortunate to have been charged only with offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace.

According to the lawyer, the Bono Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could have faced more severe “second-degree” offenses, which may have resulted in a jail sentence if he were found guilty.

Speaking on the Rainbow Radio 87.5FM show Frontline with Kwabena Agyapong, Frimpong described Abronye DC’s alleged attacks on former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu as unpardonable.

“The IGP is a police officer who has risen through the ranks to his current position, having also served as Deputy IGP under former President Akufo-Addo,” Frimpong noted.

“If Abronye claims he is corrupt, it implies that both President Akufo-Addo and former President Mahama made terrible mistakes in trusting him. You don’t attack a person to the point of calling him corrupt. He is the IGP of an institution that is highly respected in Africa and worldwide, and describing him in such a manner affects the entire Police Service.”

Mr Frimpong also advised Abronye DC’s legal team to focus on presenting evidence to defend their client rather than attacking the judge presiding over the case.

He suggested the police should have pursued more severe charges under the Criminal and Other Offences Act.

“The police should have perused through the Criminal and other Offences Act and would have found more severe charges to file against Abronye DC,” he said. “The judge who is presiding over the matter underscored the need for authorities to address these reckless behaviors of insults and vilification of leaders and other personalities.”
