Trent Alexander-Arnold will undergo a scan on the hamstring injury that he sustained in the first few minutes of Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Marseille . Alexander-Arnold, 26, sank to the turf after playing a pass in the opening stages of Tuesday’s 2-1 win at the Bernabeu . Xabi Alonso was forced into an early substitution, as Dani Carvajal came on to replace the former Liverpool star. Alexander-Arnold is due to return to Anfield for the first time since his summer transfer when Madrid travel to Liverpool on November 4. Alonso is hoping that his new signing will be available, with Alexander-Arnold set to have a scan on Wednesday. It comes after the Madrid boss said post-match: “We’re going to wait a bit with Trent because it might not be as bad as it seems.” However, Alonso did suggest that the England international will be ruled out of Saturday’s La Liga encounter against Espanyol . “We have to be creative in finding solutions,” he continued. “[Raul] Asencio came in well. [Eduardo] Camavinga and Jude [Bellingham] are back and will be able to play on Saturday.” Liverpool fans will be keeping a close eye on Alexander-Arnold’s progress with his recovery ahead of their upcoming clash with the 15-time European champions in six weeks’ time. More immediately, Real are facing a potential dilemma if Alexander-Arnold isn’t back in time for their next Champions League fixture away to Kazakhstani side Kairat. This is because Carvajal was shown a straight red card in Tuesday’s victory. The 33-year-old was sent off after a VAR review for head-butting Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli during a heated exchange. UEFA’s disciplinary committee could now decide to suspend Carvajal for an extended period, potentially including the match at Anfield in November. This would leave Alonso needing to employ his creative thinking to find a way of stopping Liverpool exploiting that side of the defence. Will Real Madrid win the Champions League? Give us your prediction in the comments section . Two Kylian Mbappe penalties, following the opening goal from Timothy Weah, were needed to beat Marseille. “A lot happened,” Alonso reflected. “It was a typical Champions League home game where anything can happen. Despite conceding a goal, we kept going and went into half-time 1-1. In the second half, the pace was less frenetic, but we felt we were creating chances to score. “Then came the red card, and despite being a man down, the team continued to dominate and press. We found ourselves 2-1 up and didn’t struggle at all. It’s an important victory to get this first phase of the Champions League off to a good start.” Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
