Ex-wife of bisexual AFL star ‘couldn’t be prouder’ of him for coming out publicly

The ex-wife of bisexual former Aussie Rules footballer Mitch Brown has said she “couldn’t be prouder” of him after he came out publicly.

Brown made history last month when he came out as bisexual, becoming the first Australian Football League (AFL) player, current or former, to do so.

In a lengthy Instagram post dedicated to her ex, with whom she has two children, former netball star Shae Bolton-Brown said the pair met when they were “baby teenage professional athletes” and spent “over 16 years” building a life and family together.

They bonded over she called their shared weirdness and desire to succeed in sports, and “both [were] a little bit queer”, she added.

“What Mitch has done for the sport of football and hopefully Australian culture is maverick to the core. I for one couldn’t be prouder of [him] and will celebrate his vulnerability loudly so hopefully those baby athletes currently playing in the AFL feel seen and safe and can be every little bit as weird… and so our kids can too.”

After coming out, Brown, who played for West Coast Eagles between 2007 and 2016, thanked family, friends and fans, including current partner Lou.

“I have been overwhelmed by the kindness, encouragement and solidarity that has poured in from people across Australia and around the world,” he said.
