Ghana Denies Getting Paid to Accept U.S. Deportees

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has denied claims that Ghana is receiving money or any other benefits from the United States in exchange for accepting some deportees.

He stated clearly that the arrangement is not for profit. “It is important to state that Ghana has not received any money, compensation or any material benefit,” he said. He explained that the decision was made for humanitarian reasons and on principle.

This clarification comes after the government faced criticism. The criticism started when it was revealed that some people from Nigeria and The Gambia were deported from the U.S. to Ghana instead of to their home countries.

Opposition politicians had accused the government of selling out the country’s sovereignty. In response, Minister Ablakwa assured the public that the agreement is carefully managed and meets international humanitarian standards. He insisted that protecting Ghana’s sovereignty and the safety of its people remains the government’s top priority.
