Travellers in and around Mumbai will soon have a new option for air travel. The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), situated near Panvel and Ulwe, is expected to commence operations by the end of September. The airport has been developed to cater to the increasing demand for air travel in the region.
NMIA has been assigned the three-word location code “NMI,” as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website. Mumbai’s current international airport, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA), continues to use BOM. Meanwhile, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) code for NMIA is VANM.
IATA code is used as a standardised identification in the global air travel and cargo industries. These codes are used on tickets, baggage tags and flight information systems to make travel easier. Meanwhile, ICAO codes are crucial for air traffic control, flight planning and airline operations.
Please note the new three letters code is NMI as per IATA so now if you travel to Mumbai check the three letters code at the time of making your airlines flight ticket..

Which Flights Will Depart Or Land At Navi Mumbai International Airport?
IndiGo and Akasa Air are the first carriers to confirm operations from NMIA. IndiGo will start with 18 daily departures connecting over 15 cities. This will gradually increase to 79 daily flights, including 14 international routes by March 2026. By November 2026, IndiGo plans to operate over 100 daily departures.
Akasa Air has also announced commercial operations in partnership with AdAirport Holdings Ltd. Initially, the airport will mostly operate 100 domestic flights every week. The carrier will also scale up its operations to up to over 300 domestic and 50 international weekly departures.
Tips Before Boarding My First Flight From Navi Mumbai International Airport
For first-time travellers at NMIA, following standard airport procedures is important. Arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight. Keep batteries, power banks and electronic devices in your hand luggage rather than checked baggage.
Avoid carrying sharp objects or other prohibited items. Have your boarding pass and ID ready for security checks. Follow airport signage for check-in counters, gates and boarding instructions.
Can’t Find NMIA On Flight Booking Platforms?
If NMI does not appear yet, it might be because the airport has not officially started commercial operations. Flight schedules are expected to roll out closer to the launch date. Travellers are advised to keep checking airline websites and booking platforms regularly for updates.
Once the first commercial flights are scheduled, NMI should appear on all major ticketing platforms.
