The much-awaited face-off between the top two javelin stars of the world – India’s Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan – will finally take place in the qualification for men’s javelin event at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo on Wednesday. It is expected that Paris Olympics gold and silver medalists – Arshad and Neeraj – will both easily qualify for the final which is scheduled to take place on Thursday evening at the same venue where Neeraj Chopra won his one and only Olympics gold medal.
The javelin field features Neeraj’s long-time rival Nadeem the reigning Olympic champion and Julian Weber of Germany the Diamond League 2025 winner. If the Indian succeeds in winning the title he will become only the third man in history to defend a javelin World Championships crown following in the footsteps of his coach Jan Zelezny (1993 1995) and Grenada’s Anderson Peters (2019 2022).

Neeraj Chopra vs Arshad Nadeem clash has added significance in the current geo-political situation after India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ in reply to Pahalgam terrorist attack which led to loss of 26 Indian lives earlier this year. There have already been calls to boycott cricket ties in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.
Team India took a big step by declining to shake hands with Pakistan cricket team after their league match in Dubai on Sunday night which has led to a massive uproar. Nadeem had taken gold in Paris with a massive 92.97m while Neeraj Chopra settled for silver at 89.45m. For now though they have been placed in separate qualifying groups.
Neeraj Chopra’s Group A also features Weber 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott veteran Czech thrower Jakub Vadlejch and compatriot Sachin Yadav. Group B will host Nadeem Peters Kenya’s 2015 world champion Julius Yego Brazil’s 90m-thrower Luiz da Silva and India’s Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh.
To make the final athletes must either clear the automatic mark of 84.50m or rank among the top 12 best throws. In the last edition in Budapest (2023) Neeraj Chopra had won gold with 88.17m edging out Nadeem (87.82m) and Vadlejch (86.67m).
