KUCHING, Sept 15: A 32-year-old man is feared to have been attacked and dragged by a crocodile while casting nets along Sungai Lubok Punggor near Kampung Lubok Punggor, Samarahan this evening.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement said the victim, identified as Ahmad Alzadkhri Sudin, had gone out early in the morning with his family members to catch freshwater prawns using a small boat.
The incident was reported to have occurred at about 4pm when the victim was suddenly attacked by a crocodile about 200 metres from the village riverbank.
Villagers immediately conducted a search but failed to locate him before alerting Bomba at 5.56pm.
Firefighters from Simunjan and Kota Samarahan stations, led by PB Mohamad Saiful Ani, were deployed to the scene, about 45km away, and arrived at 7.03pm.
“Firefighters gathered information from eyewitnesses and carried out assessment at the scene before deciding to suspend the search and rescue (SAR) operation for today.
“The operation will resume tomorrow morning (Sept 16),” the statement read.
The operation involved six firefighters with two Hilux vehicles. No other agencies were involved in the first day of the SAR mission.
As of press time, the victim has yet to be found. — DayakDaily
