OpenAI has launched a new version of its coding-focused AI ‘GPT-5 Codex’. CEO Sam Altman shared that this model already handles almost half of all Codex usage and is on its way to becoming the most widely used version very soon.
According to the reports, the new GPT-5 Codex can take on almost any type of programming task. It is able to create entire projects from the beginning, add new features to existing programs, fix errors in the code and carefully review work done by others.
For large projects, the AI can keep running for hours, testing and improving the code until everything works properly. For smaller jobs, it responds quickly and gives precise results without wasting time.
Further, OpenAI explained that the model has been trained to carefully review code and highlight critical issues. In tests with well-known open-source projects, GPT-5 Codex gave more useful and accurate suggestions than earlier versions.
The system is also reportedly designed to work across different tools and platforms. Developers can use it through the command-line tool, IDE extensions, GitHub, the cloud and even the ChatGPT iOS app.
OpenAI has also added new features to the Codex tools. The command-line interface now allows users to attach images, keep track of tasks with to-do lists and use web search directly within the tool.
GPT-5 Codex is included with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans. While it is built only for coding and not for general-purpose use, OpenAI believes it is an important step forward in AI-assisted development.
GPT-5-Codex is here: a version of GPT-5 better at agentic coding. It is faster, smarter, and has new capabilities. Let us know what you think! The team has been absolutely cooking, very fun to watch.— Sam Altman (@sama) September 15, 2025
