Heath Sampson is the CEO of Modivcare, a MaineCare transportation provider.
At Modivcare, we care about what we do and who we do it for because health care is personal. We’re dedicated to providing high-quality nonemergency transportation (NET) services to the Maine community and we have a proven track record of delivering over half of all MaineCare rides since 2013.
Despite recent news of our voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, some are questioning our ability to fulfill existing commitments. I’m here to set the record straight: We remain fully committed to delivering the high-quality services Mainers rely on, meeting members where they are and delivering the care they need to live healthier lives. Our comprehensive financial restructuring plan is designed to strengthen our organization, not undermine it. This proactive step will ensure the long-term viability of our organization and our ability to continue providing accessible health care options to communities across Maine.
Our operations and our ability to provide services to MaineCare members remain strong. We will continue to operate in the ordinary course, with no expected interruptions or changes in access to care.
We understand the unique challenges faced by communities in Maine, where residents often have to travel long distances to access essential medical care. Our NET services play a critical role in bridging this gap, and we are dedicated to preserving and expanding our services to make sure Mainers have a reliable way to access the care they need.
With a statewide reach of over 80,000 rides per month, we’re unmatched by any other NET provider in the state. Our in-state workforce of more than 110 teammates ensures that all MaineCare calls are answered by Maine-based staff trained in MaineCare systems, geography, and member needs. Our partnership with local subcontractor drivers, who know their communities and meet strict safety and compliance standards, enables us to provide reliable coverage in rural areas, long-distance trips, and urgent cases. We also safeguard state funding through proactive fraud, waste, and abuse oversight, an experienced compliance team, and tools that match members to the most cost-effective services based on their needs. Simply put, we help clients manage costs and reach more members.
Our commitment to Maine goes beyond preserving existing services, it’s about expanding access to health care and improving health outcomes for all residents. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality health care, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.
Our restructuring plan will enable us to invest in new technologies, expand our network of local subcontractor drivers, and enhance our services to better meet the needs of rural communities. By doing so, we can help to address the unique challenges faced by these communities and ensure that they have access to the health care services they need.
In the coming months, we will be working to implement our restructuring plan, which we expect to enable us to emerge from this process as a stronger, more sustainable organization. We are committed to transparency and open communication throughout this process and will keep members, teammates, and other stakeholders informed of our progress.
We expect that our restructuring plan will position us for long-term success and enable us to continue providing high-quality NET services to residents across Maine. Our teammates, local subcontractor drivers, and partners will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that members receive the high-quality care they deserve and expect.
We are grateful for the trust that the state of Maine has placed in us, and we are committed to continuing our partnership to improve health care outcomes for all residents. We will work closely with state officials, health care providers, and community leaders to ensure that our services are aligned with the state’s health care goals and priorities.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with the state and our stakeholders to ensure that all Maine residents have access to the health care services they need.
