Nagpur RTO Flyover Opens For Public: What You Need To Know

The national highways (NH) division of the state public works department (PWD) has responded to reports of delayed inauguration of the Gyanyogi Dr Shrikant Jichkar Flyover in Nagpur. Also known as the RTO flyover, the overpass was found inoperational despite its recent formal inauguration, according to a report by The Times of India. But the PWD opened both the carriageways of the flyover for public usage on Sunday, September 14.
The authorities implemented safety measures for the flyover before opening it for vehicles. It included the installation of barricades on the flyover to maintain a balanced speed limit and also at the merging point near the Bole Petrol Pump side landing.
PWD Formally Opens RTO Flyover In Nagpur
In a recent report, TOI had picked out issues with the landing on both sides of the RTO flyover. It was claimed that the two landing points carried road safety risks because of the narrow approach roads and merging points. The PWD swiftly acted upon the concerns raised by putting in safety measures on the Bole Petrol Pump side. However, the University Square side remains untouched.
Sanjeev Jagtap, the PWD executive engineer, announced the flyover opened for public usage after the security measures were verified by the body. “We removed the pandals and other materials of the event from the carriageway in the night itself. A joint inspection was carried out by traffic police and the NH division,” said Jagtap.
“We implemented temporary measures, including increasing the width of the merging point at the landing near Bole Petrol Pump, as the width was reduced because NMC is yet to give permission to cut the tree which is on the road,” he added.
Barricades Put On Both Carriageways
Extending the safety measures, the PWD officials have also deployed barricades on both carriageways, with the intention to force travellers to be mindful of their speed. While the barricades at the merger have limited the landing of the flyover to just one lane, authorities are calling it a temporary precaution for the period where riders get used to the new flyover and its speed limits.
“The merging point on the University side landing has ample space. However, we are keenly observing the traffic on the flyover and will implement measures we feel necessary in the coming days. The safety of motorists is our top priority,” said Jagtap.
The barricades at the merging point will also be removed once officials receive the permission from Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to cut the tree or translocate it.
