Netflix fans 'hooked' on 'suspenseful' thriller perfect for Sabrina fans

Netflix enthusiasts are currently engrossed in a chilling thriller that’s been dubbed ‘so bad it’s good’. The inaugural season of Mayfair Witches has recently joined the streaming behemoth’s vast catalogue. In just a few days, it has become one of the most viewed titles among subscribers. At present, it ranks seventh in the top 10 series in the UK, nestled between Hostage and My Life With the Walter Boys. Despite a lukewarm 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes , Netflix viewers can’t seem to get enough. There’s also positive news for those without a subscription to the platform. All episodes are also available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer. The series is based on the Lives of the Mayfair Witches novels by Anne Rice, who also penned Interview With the Vampire. The plot centres around renowned neurosurgeon Rowan Fielding, reports the Mirror . However, she has developed a serious issue. When she becomes angry, she kills with her mind. Over eight episodes, she embarks on a quest for answers which takes her to New Orleans, the home of her biological family. Here she learns she is the heir to a family of witches which has been plagued by a malevolent presence for generations. This presence is the spirit Lasher. Ciprien (Sip) Grieve, a dedicated agent of the Talamasca, is tasked with protecting Rowan. He quickly discovers he’s completely out of his depth as revelations emerge that could damage Rowan’s family and his position within the Talamasca. As Lasher’s influence over Rowan intensifies, her part in an age-old prophecy becomes apparent. This prophecy reaches its climax with Lasher’s birth. Rowan remains committed to developing her abilities to achieve her destiny as a healer, but when disaster strikes, she must abandon her personal ambitions and battle to protect her family. The programme stars Alexandra Daddario in the leading role, who has previously featured in True Detective and The White Lotus. The eight-episode debut series is characterised by Netflix as ‘imaginative and suspenseful’, whilst other reviewers have branded it a ‘creepy thriller’. One critic observed that period drama enthusiasts should discover plenty to appreciate alongside fantasy lovers due to how it shifts its narrative backwards and forwards through time. Meanwhile, another critic commended the leading actress’s performance and the show’s genre-blending approach: “Daddario, who was a standout in the first season of HBO’s The White Lotus, makes an appealing lead in the eerie gothic series, which leans on its horror roots.” Numerous viewers have also expressed their endorsement. One commented: “From the first episode, I was hooked-the storytelling unfolds in such an intriguing way, keeping me captivated as each new piece of the mystery falls into place. “If you’re on the fence about watching because of the reviews-give it a chance. You might just find yourself just as enchanted as I am.” Another viewer commented: “As someone who hasn’t read the novels and loves fantasy that takes hints from real life – I recommend it to all those who might have enjoyed series like Sabrina on Netflix.” Despite recognising its shortcomings, some viewers still endorse the show. One individual succinctly stated: “Mayfair Witches is so bad but so good.” Echoing this sentiment, another responded: “This is where I’m at. I can’t quit.” Mayfair Witches is streaming on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
