The Railway Workers Union of Ghana has announced a nationwide strike and peaceful picketing on September 30 to protest the government’s failure to pay salaries and entitlements owed to workers for the past 12 months.
In a formal notice to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the union said the non-payment of wages since October 2024 had left employees and their families in severe distress, citing financial hardship, health complications, broken homes, and disruption of children’s education.
“Despite repeated efforts by the Union to seek redress through engagement with the Ministry of Transport, under which the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) operates as a 100% state-owned enterprise, no steps have been taken towards negotiation, mediation, or arbitration,” part of the statement read.
The union explained that it had written to key state institutions, including the National Labour Commission, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and the Parliament Select Committee on Transport, but no progress had been made.
According to the statement, the planned action will see workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa march through designated routes in Accra.
They will present petitions to the Ministry of Transport, Parliament House, and the Ghana Railway Development Authority, before ending at the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana) headquarters.
The union assured authorities that the protest would be peaceful and urged the police to provide security to ensure order during the strike.
It added that if the Ministry of Transport fails to take concrete measures to resolve the matter by September 22, the strike will go ahead as scheduled.
